Teaching English in Chile
Posted by Erin MacKenzie - 10:21 on 06 April 2010
The Chilean government has introduced the program ‘English Opens Doors’ which means placing native English speakers into classrooms across the country in order to increase the level of English amongst the younger population. In order to participate in this program you need to be a native English speaker, have a university degree, be between the ages of 21 – 50, have a basic level of Spanish and have comprehensive health coverage as well as it being recommended that you have a TEFL certificate prior to the program.
However, this is far from being the only path for teaching English in Chile. In fact, as long as you have a university degree, your TEFL Scotland certificate and a CV free from typos you shouldn’t have too much trouble finding work in the country. Many people work on a tourist visa rather than acquiring a work permit but this means that you have to leave the country every three months and then re-enter. It shouldn’t be a problem finding work in-country rather than arranging a job before you travel out there – in fact, some would recommend this as because you are tied to a contract and unable to find other work, you are more likely to be paid less.
A good wage is about $8 an hour and you could earn up to $10,000 a year which is certainly a lot more than the average wage in the country so you will be able to live comfortably and enjoy a bit of travelling. Chile is one of the best countries in South America to teach due to its stable economy, very low unemployment rate and how welcoming it is to foreigners.
