Which TEFL course should I do?
TEFL Scotland offers a range of TEFL courses to suit everyone, and can advise you on which course is best for you.
Have a read at the guide below for recommendations on choosing your TEFL course.
Generally, the more you study, the more confident and prepared you will feel and the more appealing you will be to TEFL employers. We recommend taking at least 100 hours of TEFL training to make sure you get the best possible start in TEFL. Booking a TEFL course package will save you up to £192 over booking the individual components separately.
Recommended, Basic, or Basic+Grammar?
Recommended courses
Best for: Everyone!
Never taught before? If you are completely new to teaching, we suggest that you take one of our recommended courses. These will give you all of the knowledge and skills you need to step into the classroom. Recommended courses also make you eligible for the widest range of TEFL jobs, as many employers ask for at least 100 hours of training.
Basic courses
Best for: Previous teaching experience and confident about grammar
If you have teaching experience or are looking at teaching in a country where requirements are lower, then one of our basic courses may be all you need to start looking for TEFL jobs. Do check requirements for your chosen country though!
Basic+Grammar
Best for: Previous teaching experience
The grammar course is highly recommended (by 97% of students!) as it covers all the essential terminology and rules you are likely to come across in the classroom. If you are unsure of your modal verbs and second conditionals, take this! Booking it with your basic TEFL course will save you £39.
Before you choose a TEFL course, make sure you’ve looked into what the requirements are for TEFL jobs in the country you want to work in! See our TEFL jobs section for some examples.
Classroom or online?
Or why not the best of both worlds?
Classroom TEFL courses have the benefits of practical experience in TEFL activities and getting to teach practice lessons. Online TEFL courses go into more detail on the theory of TEFL and can be arranged around your own schedule. Choose which one suits you best, or, do what most students do, and choose a recommended package that includes classroom and online learning.
Weekend or Weekday?
We are often asked about the difference between our weekday and weekend TEFL courses. They are very similar in terms of content. The weekday course includes an extra teaching practice and a module on teaching young learners, and is a little less intense! You will not be disadvantaged in choosing one course over the other – choose the one that best fits your schedule!
